Geography

With Charlotte Mason, geography is a gentle subject that children enjoy. Imagine taking a trip to a foreign land or a state that you've never been to before. You open a living book that makes you discover real places and real people. Then a simple map study: grab your map and show them exactly where these real places and real people live.

Steps to Studying Geography:

     Living Book with Narration

          * These are books that help your child visit a place from around the world without ever leaving home. Now, don't get us wrong, if you can take a trip to another land then that is great, but not all of us can. :) That's why a living geography book is best. Just like many subjects,  narration with your living book is best too. This helps the child remember the place, the people, the land, etc.

     Map Study

          * We usually pick one continent at a time to study. Once a week we grab our blank map of our continent and ask if they know any of the map already. Then we add one or two more locations on the map. (If we are working on a new continent that they aren't sure of the spellings, I print out the names and let them simply place the name over the location.)  The next week we grab the blank map and see if they can fill in the places that they know and then add one or two more locations for them. We continue this for weeks. Looking at the map week after week you will see that the child does start to remember more and more locations.
          * This is great no matter if your reading any subject. If your book talks about a certain place, find it on the globe or a map. My kids really enjoy watching google earth find the place that we are reading about.
